Gone to seed - spinach, greens

Post: # 156258Post cochlear_nerve »

Hello

The texel greens and spinach in my garden have gone to seed - they are lanky and have started flowering. What's my best plan? Salvage any leaves then pull them out? Chop them back?

Apologies if this has been asked before.

Thanks.

funny, I was wondering the same thing about my rocket. I just keep cutting off the flower heads as the come up, but not sure how much longer they'll keep going.

Oh yes, spinach and rocket seem to go to seed very quickly. I leave the flowers for the bees and continue to harvest the leaves (though I have heard that the leaves can taste bitter after they have bolted, I have never noticed a difference in taste) When I get sick of the sight of them, or need the space, I pull them up and stick 'em on the compost heap.

Spinach and rocket are things that you should successionally sow anyway. I plant more when the previous sowing is just getting established, which works out about every 3 weeks or so. Then you should always have a new group of plants coming up.

Agree with Annpann and add coriander to the list of things to keep on sowing!

This kind of answered itself. The returns diminished to the point that it seemed best to pull the plants out and grow something else. Thanks for advice.
