onion sets - too late?

Post: # 156979Post The Prehistorian »

my onions are toast - onion fly :pale: .

if i can get some more onion sets and some enviromesh is it too late to put them in a fresh bit o ground now? Someone told me that he thought that getting onions to start depended on the length of the days and so they wouldn't grow properly if put in in the summer - is this right?

thanks!

I heard they need cold nights to develop a proper root system - so they might still grow, but not come to any good size. And probably bolt before they do anything else...

We just picked our first onions that were planted in Feb or even March and the second sowing didn't go in till about three weeks ago but are already around 10" tall,

Most onions are sensitive to daylight length so after June 21st (longest day) they will probably start to make bulbs and as the plants themselves are relatively small the bulbs will be too. At this stage you could just make use of them as spring onions.
