Potatoes from seedlings

Post: # 162067Post ina »

Has anybody ever done that? When helping a friend with weeding, we found a tiny potato plant that was quite obviously a seedling. Being me, I couldn't pass on that opportunity and took the poor little plant home. Have had it in a pot since, but it's not grown much. Now, will I be able to grow potatoes from that eventually?

Ina it's possible it was from a really tiny potato tuber not dug up with the rest or even a bit of potato peeling in some compost. I know they readily grow into potato plants but having left some of htese in the compost heap in the past I never had a crop, I guess maybe you need a larger mother seed to get a plateful of spuds? But then again maybe I didn't wait long enough?

Yeah, of course it might be from a tiny tuber - but it might also be from a seed; after all, that's how new varieties are bred. So that's kind of my hope, that I might have a new, absolutely brilliant variety in the making!

Well, I'll keep and eye on it - let's see how long it survives.
