Hi from Yorkshire

Post: # 181858Post countrygirl »

Hiya,
I have always given alot of thought to being more selfsufficient...ish but not put a great deal into practice.Well just recently I have been given the opportunity of keeping a few hens at a friends farm.
It is something that i have only dreamt of being able to do before now. This has given me the kick start i needed and now i just cant wait for the new year to make a few more changes to being a little more self sufficient.

I loved having hens and they ranged free in my garden but always lay their eggs in their little shed or the rabbit hutch when the rabbit was out!

I was left eventually with 1 very tame one - betsy hen.
she`d sit on my knee if I was outside and peck at my ice lolly or a sandwich
we could stroke her and she came in the house ...............was so cheeky.

The vet said she won`t last without the company of other hens but 2 years later, still thriving and still laying she went on holiday to a friends farm and became one of their hens.
She lived another 3 years till a fox got her.

They have individual personalities, and I only gave her away because my daughter had a baby, and you have to be careful with hen poo and little ones

I do miss her though
