Salad - Little holes for ventilation?

Post: # 197798Post energysaving »

Well, they're probably not, but I'm stumped. My first attempt at salad (in a raised bed).
We've been eating baby leaves of sorrel, spinach and mixed salad leaves, together with pea shoots for the past few weeks. Very nice
Last Friday they were fine, then we had three baking hot days. Now the speedy salad, the rocket and the radish leaves are peppered with tiny holes. The sorrel, spinach, pea shoots and lovely soft lettuce leaves are untouched.
I was expecting great big slug bites, but not these. :dontknow: Anyone got any ideas, tips, or possibly a salad darning needle?

Er...this is the delightful Flea Beetle I am afraid. My rocket is the same. They always show up about late May, for a month or so. Some things get nibbled, others don't. They aren't interested in my little gems, or my red/green salad bowl, and for some reason prefer seedlings/young plants to big ones? They also much radish, and sometimes beetroot leaves

Not sure what you can do that is organic, to get rid I am afraid, though I did hear that it is worse in the dry weather - so maybe dampening down the leaves might help - sure others will know.

Hope there is some left for you!

Not sure if anyone else has tried the greasy card trick, but it works for me.

Is salad with holes even less calories because of the holes, or more calories because of the fleas?

They eat brassicas which sadly is what rocket and radish are, that's why your lettuces are OK cos they are not brassicas. I have them here from spring through to about mid August  so we only eat rocket and radishes in the autumn!
