New Zealand Gardiner Magazine letter

Post: # 197842Post homegrown »

I found this great letter in an old copy of nz Gardiner

"My Norfolk Pine had to go to make way for veges.

It had grown colossal in our section and all this talk about hoe much produce everyone gets from their garden tipped the scales. When it had gone and the light streamedin, I took a glass of orange juice and sat down on the stump in the sun to survey the scene. I had a new large area to plant.
Iplanned to grow rampicante courgettes, Charentais melons and nasturtiums to ramble. I would edge the new space with fairy roses and plant an apple tree in the corner. I saw the back of our house and imagined a climbing rose, new dawn seemed like the right choice.

But as I went to stand up something held me back. I was stuck fast, through my shorts and the back of my legs and all that lies between, to the treacle-like gum that seeped through the final wound across the tree stump and I couldn't move. It took tem minutes to prise myself free and an agnonising walk to the house where I underwent a painful extraction of my clothes. The space has been dubbed, by my merciless family, the Brazillian Garden!

E, Jackson, Napier

Only one word springs to mind OUCH!
Our remote ancestors said to their mother Earth, "We are yours."
Modern humanity has said to Nature, "You are mine."
The Green Man has returned as the living face of the whole earth so that through his mouth we may say to the universe, "We are one."
