Romaine Lettuce

This row of 12 plants of romaine lettuce were planted as seedlings in early May. Usually there is some bug damage. The five that have been pulled to date are perfect with no bug damage. To preserve for a longer period after pulling, the root is kept in water in the kitchen. I have been told that picking the leaves from the plant in the garden allows the plant to grow and one gets fresh lettuce as required. I have never tried this method.

I planted Romaine lettuce this year and I`m using it as 'cut and come again'. I cut the whole lettuce as I use it about two inches above the ground and it grows new leaves like magic. It`s worked up until now this year, anyway. I`ve got about three dozen lettuces planted and they`ve kept us going for ages.
We are stardust, we are golden, and we`ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.

That never seems to work for me with cos lettuce. I even tried Valmaine which were supposed to be bred to reshoot after cutting the mature lettuce but they'd just shoot then die. Probably cos it's too hot by the time they are mature and cos lettuce really doesn't like mid summer heat. :(
