yellow beetroot

Anyone got experience of growing yellow beetrooot?

I thought I'd try it this year because if it tastes the same and doesn't make all your salads red, that would be a good thing. I brought them on in modules and planted them out beginning of May. Bam the things were eaten by pigeons. Never had this with red beetroot so they weren't protected. So on goes the netting, but they have been so slow even recovering a few leaves and still no sign whatsoever of a root. In the meantime the traditional red ones have grown and half have been eaten.

I had a lot of success with yellow beetroot this year (sorry - can't remember the exact variety). It did have the taste but not the staining effect. Definitely an idea I will repeat next year.

I grew white, red and yellow beetroot last year and OH liked them in that order, she preferred white, then red and yellow not a lot.
As to growing, the white grew fastest followed by the yellow.

Thanks, obviously my yellow ones didn't like being pecked at. I'll try again next year.

Hi Graham...at least you have some beetroot...our red crop is dismal this year ..took ages to germinate, then got eaten by pigeons...never happened before (why this year??). Resowed and now have just three fairly long , fairly sparse rows! Last year we had a different variety (wish we had made a note of it ) which grew huge but were still edible when the size of melons!! Did not go woody at all. So if anyone can suggest the variety, we will try them next year. Might have a go at yellows but I am sentimental about all that red staining!!

beatroot can be grown all year round. In the soil till it gets too hard / cold then in a greenhouse/ pot/ poly tunnel etc.

I got two varieties from the reel seed company and both have grown really well.

Big Al, thanks for reminding me to sow some for the polytunnel, we actually prefer beetroot as a winter vegetable, roasted with balsamic vinegar, delicious.
