Hedgerow ID?

This was growing on a hedge and I was wondering if the berries are poisonous or edible? What plnat is it? thanks!

For red berries in a hedge, my first guess would be Hawthorn (Crataegus) but, as you can see from a photo on Wikipedia, the leaves are very different. It could be a different variety but I wouldn't start eating it just yet.

ps. some lovely large and tasty berries on the hawthorn branch we took down yesterday from where it overhung our back garden.

It looks like it could be a Sorbus species but I can't get any closer than that. If you compare it with the Swedish Whitebeam wiki here you can see there are similarities, but it is not the same. There seems to be some hybridisation between closely related Sorbus species so it may not be possible to get a definitive answer.

I agree that this is a Sorbus sp., but can't do any better than that either. It's a shame, because there are a couple of trees like this near me, one exactly the same, one with more elongated fruit, and both look quite promising as potential edibles. Of course, I'm not going to chance my arm without a sound identification... or at all preferably ... I really should get a good tree book.

Any ID help would be greatly appreciated.
