Germans have been urged to keep an eye out for eggs that may have been tainted by contaminated animal feed.Thousands of chickens have been culled and 1,000 farms ordered to stop selling their products after toxic dioxin was found in poultry and pig feed.Authorities say more than 100,000 eggs that may have been contaminated have been produced by two farms in the past two weeks.

A German feed producer has said it found the dioxin in routine testing. The frightening part is that it may have been missed during routine testing.

Of course the problem is that even if you have your own chicken, you still have to trust that the feed you buy in is not contaminated.
Even straight grain could be tainted, so unless you grow your own feed as well, home produced eggs could still be bad for you.

Update - 14 tons of liquid eggs (must be quite a few dozen) has entered the UK food chain and is likely to be used in pastries and mayo. But we have been assured there is no risk to our health - so that's ok then

[Oh dear. What a shame. According to the Guardian:- "Germany has closed more than 4,700 farms, mainly in Lower Saxony... The scare is costing German farmers €60m (£50m) a week as egg sales have plummeted."

Just fancy, 4,700 battery units closing down and the remaining battery businesses losing fifty million quid a week. How sad. I have put a couple of bottles of elderflower wine in the 'fridge to chill. It makes a pleasant change to read some good news.

Hmmm. This is just another example of the problems caused by globalisation. Some eggs in Germany are contaminated by feed (grown where?), some of those eggs are then transported to Holland where they are converted into liquid egg which is then transported all around the world. Make traceability so much more difficult.

If we all only ate local food then the problem would be contained within a small and more manageable area.

Eggs have always been a problem area with food stuffs. Growing up in farming communities I suppose I always knew that eggs could be a dodgy item. But with hens free range and thrown grain or whatever grown on site we had a bit more control.

Think of all the salmonella scares there have been over the years with eggs. This is just the latest in a line of nasty events with eggs.

Believe me, growing into being a vegetarian and giving up eggs was not hard with the knowledge that they have always been a weak link in the food chain. And yes, I can make you cakes and puds without eggs so your sweet tooth will not be deprived here.

Well I have always eaten eggs as I love them and nothing will scare me enough to stop eating them. You have to put a bit of danger in your life.

If you adopt good husbandry your eggs should be salmonella-free. The vast majority of salmonella outbreaks are from battery farms where animal welfare is minimal and bacteria, such as salmonella spread easily in such intensive systems.

Hello there ,

the contamination origins fom Holland , where they had the chemical fire this week , but did not form any health threat .Only to find out that police and fire brigade are now en masse being treated in hospitals for lung and skin problems .
The soure of the dioxine contamination is from Holland, a company involved in Bio diesel sold a waste product to a producer of chicken food in Gemany . This means that waste of waste is being converted into animal food which the paupers eat .

If we could all be as self sufficient as possible we could all afford to buy really bio food , but seeing that cost's a hell of alot
most of us are restricted to the mass produced food .
Chemical waste is processed in food , aand saw dust is added to bread , good for fibres .
