Since baked tatties were a success I am attempting baked tatties, pork chops and corn on the cob. All wrapped in foil and popped under the fire! Fingers crossed

Not wishing to be pedantic, do you mean under the grate, zaxdog? Our hearth is Liscannor stone and a bit heavy to lift.
Photo maybe?

Good stuff!
We cook almost everything by wood during the winter. It is something that never ceases to amaze me. Child of the North Sea gas age, you see

To clarify: what we call the grate is the metal stand upon which the coals or wood sit to burn. Therefore the food wrapped in foil is going under that amongst the ashes to bake. We would call the stone floor of the hearth the hearthstone.
Going to try Linda McC sausage rolls under there for lunch. Will report on success (or lack of it)

Much as I'd hate to promote consumerism, I have one of these
http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/diablo-sandwich-toaster/
and it's great for cooking little pies over (or ineed under - I haven't tried it that way) the fire.

Ha! Looks great...I'd like one square-ish in shape with a longer handle. Good idea though.Zech wrote:Much as I'd hate to promote consumerism, I have one of these

Superb!
Okay so if I was to try this inside my woodstove, I would be putting them in the ash pan underneath the fire right?
I've had the kettle on the top, and often warm the wee one's drinks on it, but have never actually cooked inside of it.
If hubby finally makes a decision on who he wants to come and commission our woodfired rayburn then I wouldn't need to know these things would I?
Incidentally, did you record how long these things took? I'd be very interested to know.

For baked tatties I just added half again the time I'd use with my oven.
I have also been using a pan on the coals to heat water etc. It's a great way to fill my stone pig and heat my tootsies. Keeping my eyes open for a cast iron pan and/or camping kettle! That will be added to my list for charity shop trawling in Oban on Wednesday.

We have been using the top of the woodburner to heat a kettle, soup ect but I have never thought of using the ash tray for cooking - what an excellent idea - off to wrap up some spuds in foil
