underground irrigation

Post: # 224516Post niknik »

Soe time ago, whilst idly surfing I came across a site with quite detailed instructions about building beds with buried tubes to irrigate from below.. It was quite simple, and cheap, but quite detailed .
I did do a container, with hebs, with some pipe work, and why it justsprang to mind, I dontknow, but before I startplanting out, I´m thinking I should try some more of this.

Anyone got any ideas where to look?

Itwould be quite beneficial, as due to the rather high temps we get , it would mean saving on water, as less surface evaporation,
and I could mulch r putplastic /cardboard down as well to help.
I think I have all the necessary, so would be good to give ita go.

Our irrigation system has a large tube leading to many smaller ones with holes in them. Whenever we plant stuff for summer we lay the pipes down and plant stuff next to each hole (I think it's around every 30cms) then cover the pipes with soil and then mulch around both the pipe and plants. Every evening the we turn the tap on at around half speed and water for around half an hour. We have an underground water cistern full of rainwater and have never needed to buy water in, whereas several neighbours water from above and need to buy water many times during the summer.

I have got some of that irrigation tube.dont know if it´s any good though  .

Tis was a deeper system, more for raised beds, or terracing I seem to recall..which would suit what I have. also as deeper there was less need to filtergrey waterso much before use, which is of further interest as am now trying o recycle as much wateras possible!

I did bookmark it, way back when. But as had a total system crash and couldnt recover anything. I have no idea what the site was.

Loads ofgood dagrams, easy explanatios. NOT comercial.....
I´ve looked and looked and looked, just cant find it .

I'm not sure about this,Icant help thinking it would be difficult to calculate how much water and how often(easier when you can see moisture at the surface, though it's commonly used when planting large specialist trees but in their case they just need LOADS of water. The trickle irrigation outlined above is widespread in commercial Tunnels in UK and works very well and saves a huge amount of water.Even the non-commercial black flimsy tube you can buy is well worth having.Connect up to an outside tap,and way to go.I'm interested in how they irrigate olive groves(but I dont want to hijack,so I'll start another thread sometime)>
