Not just the tip about chitting sweetcorn (which are doing so as I type  ) but it works for other seeds too.

Couple of weeks ago I sowed 12 orange cosmos in individual pots in my cold frame. One solitary one emerged.

So I had the bright idea to try them on damp kitchen paper in a marge tub - result - within 4 days they have gone from sprouting little roots in the marge tub to being planted out in the empty pots to emerging as little plants in the cold frame.

I'm now going to do it for all annual flower seeds that are large enough to handle.

Cheers! :hugish:

That's what this forum should be about, sharing experiences and knowledge.

Regarding chitting seeds, I do it for all large seeds, or at least all those seeds which can be handled easily, which are not sown in any great quantity. So, I do tomatoes, sweetcorn, parsnips, cucumber, squash, peppers, melons & courgettes .... but I don't do peas or any beans.
It's also useful for doing a germination test on old seed, even on very small seeds, if half germinate you know that you need to sow twice as much.

Thanks for the thanks.
