Garlic - are we nearly there yet?

Post: # 232355Post bonniethomas06 »

Was weeding around my garlic last night and 'accidently' dug one up.

Very dissapointed to note that while it smells garlicky, it is just a single stem, like a rather pathetic but pink leek. :(

It went in in October ffs. Shouldn't it be almost nearly there by now? :dontknow:

This is the first year I have grown it...or rather still been living in the same place to see it 6 months later!

The bulbs should be starting to think about swelling, but it's a while yet before they're ready... Reminds me, I've been meaning to give mine a nice little top-dressing of seaweed meal - apparently they benefit from a feed around now.
Cheers

Good idea Dunc.

Dont have any seaweed, but a big stash of BF&B, will give them a little sprinkle later on.

Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing last weekend. I've done a good top dress of chicken manure but have a bin full of nettle compost and have a 220lt drum of crushed and cut up seaweed soaking so that will get sloshed about tomorrow.

Just out of interest how long does it take to make seaweed compost tea?

I start using it as soon as the water takes on colour and starts thickening or turning silky, usually after a few days to a week. Then each time I take liquid out it's topped back up with water and left until next time. It stands topping up a good few times before the seaweed's spent.

Maybe not, can't remember to be honest! But then again I don't know what day of the week it is so how I'm supposed to know what month it is right now I don't know  Yes you are absolutely right, when I was away a few years ago at end of June/early July one year it had gone a bit past it by then so yes, middle of June I guess is about right and maybe earlier this year!

I'm getting old - about to have a BIG ZERO birthday   so can't remember things! But I'm glad it will be soon as it's looking a bit yellowy despite me watering it.

Glad its not just me ..cannot believe its nearly JUNE!

I cant even remember where I planted a couple of garlic bulbs last autumn...stuck them somewhere in the back of a border! Will they rot if I dont find them in time or will I end up with a bigger crop next year??

Happy Birthday MMM...the big three-o then?? :drunken:
