Help with mushy peas!

Post: # 235575Post zaxdog »

Hi all,

I bought a 500g pack of dried marrowfat peas and I want to make them up but of course I put them in a jar and ditched the packet (with instructions) though I do have the wee bicarb tablet. I know I normally would soak 'em overnight but I wanted to have them tonight at around midnight. OH is doing a "ham radio" contest and I want to bring him something nice and filling at the halfway point

I have a slow cooker but I can boil 'em too if that works better.

Help pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :hugish:

Sorry it's a bit late but you can still do them. Soak in boiling water for an hour then boil in lots of water- keep topping it up with boiling water if it gets too thick. Shouldn't take more than about an hour to cook after a hot soak. Personally I never bother with the bicarb.

Lots of salt, pepper and vinegar and serve with brown bread and butter. Heaven.

I never use those tablets either.

Soak 'em for 24 hours then pressure cook covered in fresh water (with a little oil to stop them foaming) for around 7-8 minutes. Let the pressure off quickly under running cold water to let the peas burst and mush.

A generous teaspoon of brown sugar, salt to taste then serve in a mug with mint sauce and a spoon.

Well I soaked them in boiling water for ten minutes and then bunged them in the slow cooker for four hours. They were yummy  and since I made way too many there are now three portions in the freezer awaiting mackerel season!

Probably not as I tend to only work 2m and above, and you don't get too much VHF Es in Scotland.
Getting myself geared up for 70cm EME, but it's a slow process as I have to move my small tower to the middle of my potato patch, and I can't do that until I dig them up in October.
I might work him this winter though as I intend to spend a lot of time on 20m & 30m PSK when it's too windy for the moon.

Bet that's all gobbledygook for everybody else.

That's one of the most wonderful, if opaque, lines I've ever read
