Do you keep livestock? Having any problems? Want to talk about it, whether it be sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, bees or llamas, here is your place to discuss.

Is it possible to keep chicks in a heated plant propergator?

Post: # 240574Post Abba »

Hello,
I would like to know if it is possible to keep young chicks in a heated plant propergator.
I have heard that some people have used them as a brooder but is this possible?
What can I do to make it better for chicks?
Will a heat mat work better?
Thank you.

Yes, a propagator would make a reasonable brooder as long as they can get out of it if they want to, they need to be able to cool down as well as get warm.
A heat mat would also do as long as it's waterproof, but it would take a lot of cleaning when they no longer need it. A 100w light bulb suspended over them would also work, although some people think the 24 hour light is bad for them.
They need hardly any heat at this time of year after the initial couple of days provided they are indoors, and after they are a week old can survive easily with no heat if they are in a draught proof enclosure and can snuggle up together.
