blood in eggs

Post: # 24767Post WitchypooNo2 »

I'm sure its normal (In thesense that I hope its normal!!) But when I cracked on of Ruby's eggs to scramble it there was a streak of blood around the yolk. Now my head says that eggs are just chook periods and therefore blood is a oart of that but it just worried me so I binned it. Am I being silly? or is it something to keep and eye on?

thanks in advance

Read in a book the other day that this can happen and is nothing to worry about.

Some interesting info there... fine to eat... but as it says, if it's a regular occurance from a particular hen you may not wish to breed from her.

Chook periods!! LOL Never thought of it like that... thank GOD I'm not a chook

If it's occasional and not from the same hen, then it's probably down to one-off moments of stress and nothing to worry about. Hens get stressed by the slightest things.

If it's from the same hen, happens regularly and there's no apparent cause of stress, then it's genetic and you shouldn't breed from her.

If you find all or almost all your eggs suddenly have blood around the yolk, then your hens have had a high stress event. We had this a week ago after an RAF Tornado went over very, very low (freaked out the boys as well as the pigs and chickens). Almost all the eggs for two days were banded (indicating they'd paused halfway through) and when I cracked a couple to check, many had blood inside. I just threw out three days worth of eggs, gave the chickens a vitamin supplement and they've settled down again.

Would you consider a four year old staring at you intensly while you are tryoing to lay, stressful? I'm thinking that was it!!!
