Growing pulses from the supermarket...?

Post: # 255866Post Chants Cottage »

A few days ago I put a lot of chickpeas, butterbeans and soya beans in a tray of tissue and soaked them to see if any will germinate... The chickpeas are looking promising but I suspect I'm on a hiding to nothing with the soya beans. No idea about the butter beans. Just wondered if anyone else had had much / any luck with growing dried pulses like this...

Not with pulses, but my dad once germinated some plum tomatoes from a tin

I've never tried growing them to mature plants but use them regularly for sprouts - delicious.

It's unlikely that the soya beans will amount to anything over here, they require a really long growing season, plant breeders have produced a strain specifically for the UK, but I doubt they're the ones you'll buy, dried, in a shop. Don't know about the butter beans but, again, they're a staple of southern USA so I'm guessing they have a longer season than we can provide too.

Well, I've planted the sprouted chickpeas in pots in the greenhouse now so I suppose I'll just cross my fingers and wait. The butterbeans and soya beans as predicted are doing, well, not a lot. I have sprouted beans to eat before but I've got a really bad habit of putting them in the sprouter, hiding them in the recommended dark place and... forgetting about them until they have turned into a big horrible mess of mould.... Maybe I should try again and leave them on my windowsill. Not sure they have to be in the dark anyway?...

I tried growing canellini beans from the supermarket last year. The plants grew quite well, though they were fairly small (I have no idea how big they were supposed to be). I got a few beans off them, but only very few. Mind you, the broad beans were much the same last year, too.
