I miss going in Woolworths or wherever and being able to hold the music in your hands. Probably is a bit of an environmental no-no.

Still got all my vinyl and a great deck to play it on, a Garrard 401 with SME arm. I often have vinyl days where I spin some discs and transport myself back in time. Another bonus being that at least you can read the sleeve notes without the use of a magnifying glass. Happy days!
Has anyone seen the plot, I seem to have lost mine?

That's an old record deck. I like using the Pro-Ject Debut III record decks.

I like vinyl. I've got quite a bit. I'm enough of a Luddite to actually want to see what I've bought if I'm going to keep it, not that that stops me paying €10 per month for Spotify Premium. I find vinyl (and CDs) have the huge plus points of not easily being included in the wash, not disappearing forever down the back of sofas and of having sleeve notes.
And it's not as if MP3 players and iPads are exactly benign. Interesting to see that Apple has moved on from being a garage-based enterprise run for love by a bunch of fluffy geeks into a $600 billion corporation now being accused of price fixing of e-books and exploitative labour practices amongst its suppliers.

i dont have any vinyl but some of my friends do. they have BIG collections of loads of grate tunes. its all new techno/electro stuff, amazing tunes! they've all got decks in their houses pumping out banging tunes for house parties
they make and play their own music in clubs too so they have all this equipment for making music with loads of buttons and complicated looking technology
plus my dad has a big record collection and one of those old record players. he's got all the classics like pink floyd, led zepplin and all those bands i grew up listning to up full blast with my dad playing air guitar in the living room
they dont make music like that anymore, i hate all the shit they play on TV now.

I'm married to a vinyl junkie. He's got about 40,000 records - all genres. We used to trawl vide greniers here for him to buy more but those days are long gone. Enough really is enough!
He can recite track lists of obscure 60s prog LPs which is actually quite easy as there is usually only one or two tracks on 'em!
Still, it could be worse. He could be a train spotter...

Oh, I do love my old vinyl... And even if I'm buying new music, I still always go for physical media rather than downloads - I've lost far too many files over the years to trust anything important to virtual storage. Plus most MP3s sound rubbish anyway. You can still get that record shop buzz - there's loads of second-hand vinyl out there, and there's nothing more environmentally friendly that buying pre-loved stuff.
As for playback hardware, I've got a BIX deck with an Origin Live OL-1 arm (with the counterweight mod and a custom balanced external rewire) and Ortofon Salsa MC cartridge, going into a kit-built valve phono stage (the Phono II from the sadly defunct World Audio Designs, with a number of after-market tweaks and component upgrades) via a pair of hand-wound Sowter step-up transformers. The output from that is then routed into my WAD KEL-84 integrated valve amp (again with a number of tweaks and component upgrades, including a complete internal rewire with 99.99% pure silver) via a pair of home-brewed air-cored Litz-braided interconnects (which nobody else in the entire world knows how to make - in fact I'm not sure that I can remember either...) and then into my second-hand KEF CS1As, which were KEF's kit version of the legendary BBC LS3/5A bookshelf monitors.
You can get some bloody amazing hi-fi if you build it yourself.

Sheesh with the living space I do not have I would not like to have to carry vinyl any more. I'm all for CDs or YouTube personally. If I still had a bloke who did vinyl I would have to move out into a tent.

I know what you mean. I have lots of vinyl and it's not the cheap stuff, a lot of it is hard to find and worth some money too but i have this conflict going on because i plan to travel too... so i'm having to put some in storage.Flo wrote:Sheesh with the living space I do not have I would not like to have to carry vinyl any more. Why do some things 'not sound right' on MP3? AC / AC on vinal just sounds better!

Vinyl has a warmer sound. Even MP3s recorded from vinyl have a warmer sound. The mastering on some of the MP3s leave a lot to be desired.cideristhefuture wrote:Why do some things 'not sound right' on MP3? AC / AC on vinal just sounds better!
