Need help IDing these please

Post: # 280667Post RunnerBean »

I found them today at the new allotment when I was cutting back all the brambles in what used to be a fruit cage, so I'm thinking they might be some sort of fruit.

The first is shrubby but it had been swamped and isn't in great shape. Part of it does have flowers on but I don't recognise it. There were no thorns that I could see.

The second one was scrambling everywhere like the bramble but it has no thorns. I thought I saw some fruit but everything was all tangled up so it's hard to tell. I got a photo of the flowers though. It might just be a weed!

Thanks for any help!

Hmm, I'm thinking the second one must be some sort of thornless blackberry or hybrid, although the leaves are nothing like wild blackberries. The flowers are the same though.

Still no clue on the first!

I agree, I think the second one is a thornless blackberry.
The first one looks like a Gojiberry bush. I would be interested to know if you get fruit from it later, as I keep half heartedly thinking of getting one.

Disclaimer: I almost certainly haven't a clue what I'm talking about.

Yes, I've got a thornless blackberry that looks just like that. No idea about the first one though - how exciting!

I had to look it up but, having done that, I think Tony's spot on ...

Well, how about that, I was thinking about growing some goji berries. I'll let you know what happens, but it's in a very sorry state at the moment. I think there may be two of them but not sure if the other one has snuffed it. I'll clear some space around them and maybe chuck some chicken poo on, give them a bit of TLC and see what happens.

Thank you all  Nice to know I've inherited something other than weeds!
