Knock yourself out - subheading

Post: # 29858Post Boots »

Just thought I'd share my ffffffffffffffffff moment with ya all.

Some may recall, some time back, about 3 weeks I think... I whacked up the last wall of the extension and set about moving first the bedroom, and then the office.

What I quite probably forgot to mention, was I was getting a tad tired of building. Now, the last wall, I decided was just gonna go up in one hit. Not as I had done all other walls - in 4 course bits - but straight up, cos I was sicka getting all muddied up and hauling bricks above my head, ra ra ra.

And so it was. The final wall went up, window went in and I thought 'mmmm. not quite as neat as the others, but heck it'll do' :geek:

I then set about putting my office in, which so happened to mean that the pooter was positioned beside this wall. As was the heater.

All's good. Proud as punch. People are visiting and making ooh ahh sounds. Everyone seems pretty impressed. I however, was positioned under it and as I typed away, I became convinced it was moving! Having built the thing I was certain this wall had left certain points that I was aware of, but no-one else seemed to notice.

I keep grabbing mates and saying "Can you see that?" Nah, no-one could see anything... "I swear this bugger is moving..."

I grab a brickie mate from a coastal town. "Come check this out... Can you see this?" He sees it. After about two weeks I had a 2 inch bow below the window and at least an inch of movement away from the top beam. Brickie checks it out, rolls his eyes at me because we all know amateurs should never attempt such tasks. "Ever heard of a string line?" he says. "Bloody 'ell" I fume, "Of course I have, but the bugger didn't start there, did it? It is moving!" Brickie rolls his eyes again... Like I have arrived from planet peanut or something. Bricks don't move. This is earth, I say. The earth moves! "Just render it out, square it up. She'll be right, mate" And off he goes.

So render I do. Level it all out. Stand back and think, "Ok, we'll see if that stops it." That was Monday.

Saturday comes. Girls and I are preparing for a bike rally. Mate is ready. Just about to head out. Dog lets out a weird bark. It's her warning bark. Bloody hell, must be a snake. Get up to investigate and there is an almighty BOOM! From out of a huge bomb burst of dust comes the dog, head and tail town.

Mate says "Bloody 'ell it's Belfast!" and bolts for the front door (He was there... Belfast, I mean). Girls and I look at each other, and wait for the dust to settle. We are left with a huge gaping hole, tonnes of rubble, a very dusty dog, and buried beneath the rubble is my pooter - including brand new hard drives (am I glad I deferred pick up on the flat screen or what?), antique typewriter (that would obviously survive Chernobyl, because it's fine) and the heater that flat out refuses to party with me again, and the brand new (recycled) carpet that now looks like its 20 years old!

So, I just thought I'd let you know I am mudbricking again  And I am just doing 4 courses at a time... letting them dry, contract, settle or whatever it is they do, and then doing a bit more, real slowly like...

Am also on the lookout for a new window...

You cowbag. You've made me feel all guilty because I'm laughing so hard tears are rolling down my face but it's not really funny is it. Anyway, no-one was hurt so maybe I'm allowed to laugh.

You have permission to belt out the biggest belly laugh you can muster Chicky! Tis good for the soul.

I am sitting here with 4 courses back up beside me overlooking the paddock! It is bleeping freezing! I may as well be IN the paddock. Donkeys keep cruising past to see what I'm up to, as their fence is only a few metres from where the wall once was.

Can see a lovely sky full of stars...

Moths keep flyin in my coffee...

Bloody ell its cold...

Oh BTW - the boys loaded the pig for me while they were here! Thank God, or that would probably be pokin its head in...giving me typing tips...

Oh, Boots!!! And we all had such confidence in you.

What went wrong - was it just that the bricks had not dried out properly, or did something else happen? In your dry climate, it's hard to think that the rain, or something could have affected the bricks, especially if they are substantial enough. And permanently rock-hard ground (as I imagine) is not going to need much in the way of foundations.

How about a bit of strawbale building, next time - I could give some advice[1] about that.

[1] Not necessarily the right advice, you understand.

Well... it was just plain slackness on my part, I think Muddy. Just wanted it done and was ready to move on to other projects and just ended up a bit reckless, I think.

I had a slight visible bow in one spot on the left hand side of this wall from the 4th course up. Daughter number two had a new pup who kept going over the wall in this spot and it dried slightly bowed. I should have pulled out a few bricks before bricking on and straightened them up, but didn't. That was the beginning of the problems...

From course 4 up, I decided it was all going in in one hit, and I decided not to box the entire window as I had done previously as this was not an opening window. Second and third mistake occured there.

There was also a huge vine that created a natural wall in this spot. It grew on a wire fence a foot back from the wall site and was beautiful and, I figured, insulating... I decided not to pull it down, but to attempt to work beside it. This was the biggest mistake, I think.

To chest height, I was able to come back over the wall and reach down it to stabilise the outer side of the wall, add mortar, and check the line of the bricks - BUT once I got past chest height, I had to work from the outside and go through the vine and fence to do it. Not very effective.

So... the window went in with only a top reinforcing beam, the bricks from that point were well bedded on the inside of the wall but not the outside from that point, and we already had a low bow dispersing pressure from the left side.

As the wall (from the 5th course) and the window went up in one hit, it had to dry in one hit. Over a couple of weeks drying time there was a lot of movement. With the left side settling and the centre of it pulling back from the side wall. It followed the curve I had thought I corrected from the dog. The mortar, being heavier and thicker on the inside of the wall also contracted as it dried, drawing the wall slightly forward on itself. It moved about an inch forward on the top beam.

So... we ended up with what I can only describe as a wavy wall. It bowed slightly out on left and the top half leaned in, giving something of a cave like look.

And cave it did!

The top row of bricks (which were the most difficult to stabilise through the vine came in, with the bulk of the bricks following the lower lean and going out. Needless to say, the vine has now disappeared beneath all the bricks and there is no sign of the wire fence yet... but am sure I will find it as I continue to rebuild.

It is a very good example of shoddy workmanship, Muddy. I got to the end and just wanted it finished, cut some corners, ignored some problems, got a bit cocky as the other 4 walls were/are great, and basically ballsed it up.

But hey, we live and learn...

aw, Boots, stop beating yourself up about it (not that you need me to write that)
You're achieving much more than most of us here even dream about ...
It's a pain, but that's all.

This whole learning process can be a bugger, can't it? CM is right about not being too hard on yourself about it, but if you figure out what you did wrong you learn lots. In my experience, this is the sort of thing that teaches you as much about yourself as about the task you are doing.

I wouldn't be the man I am today if I hadn't ballsed everything up on the way (an educational technique that looks set to continue).
