I've tried many times to make my own version - I would kill to have some, but am hopelessly allergic to vinegar, so I've had several attempts at making my own, having "cribbed" the ingredients list, and used lemon juice instead of vinegar.........from memory, tinned tomatoes, dates, tamarinds, chili and molasses and brown sugar, and lemon juice (I may have omitted the odd one or two) - it can be quite reasonable - I just let it simmer for a while, then bung it into a liquidiser - keeps well in the fridge!

A quick Google suggests it is Heinz. which is part-owned by Nestles! :?
Apparently, it's now to be made in Holland!

I found this out recently and it has spurred me on to make my own. I have a recipe which sounds fab, I will test this out and report back if successful. Just you wait and see me take Nestle on  I will need you all to donate your used sauce bottles mind! :smilebox:

if you can develop a passable copy using lemon juice instead of vinegar, I shall be forever in your debt!

From Wikipedia:
In May 2006, Heinz announced plans to switch production of HP Sauce from Aston to its European sauces facility in Elst, the Netherlands, prompting a call to boycott Heinz products in the Birmingham area. The move will result in the loss of approximately 125 jobs at the Aston factory and has been criticised by Birmingham politicians and union officials, especially as the parent company still want to use the image of the image of the House of Commons on its bottles. In the same month, Labour MP Khalid Mahmood brandished a bottle of HP Sauce during Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons as part of a protest against the Heinz move. He also made reference to the sauce's popularity with the former Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson. These plans were confirmed to happen on 23rd August 2006 and the factory at Aston will shut March 2007.

HP Sauce hasn't been the same since they put thickeners in it to try and make it more ketchup-like. Which marketing consultancy came up with that idea? I liked it fine runny.
