should we not use the term ssish?
Been speaking to people about the term ssish as an abrevation of who we are - it was not until I spoke it outloud that I realised that there is somewhat of a fatal floor in this term. It could be confused to being like the S.S. - which I really would not want to be associated with. Any other suggestions that we could use?

Heh! I take your point - SSish could be taken as meaning slightly Nazi. Particularly unfortunate as '-ish' tends to be a Jewish vernacular. Can't say I've ever had cause to say it out loud, but doing so does seem to make it more obvious.
Maybe we should claim the letters back.
Or, if we do speak the term, say it as a word (ssish) rather than as S.S.ish.
There was a jolly decent sports car in the '30s called the SS. Later known as a Jaguar. The name was changed for precisely these reasons.

Yep a tricky one indeed
As much as I am for reclaming things back (very happy that you can fly the flag of St George again) - I am not so sure about the ss thing, I might be a bit of a wimp on this one and start using either ishers or sish mind you say that out loud and it sounds like a kebab

just in the same way that we use ssish at the moment, when abreviating selfsufficientish on posts and such.adekun wrote:Seriously, how do you plan to use it - I'm unsure?

What's goin on here then, Nev?
Folks playing with our slang? I think we better help em out a bit with some Aussie guidelines...
First up - Tis not eSeS-ish!
There is no second capital or word.
Nicks are derived from syllable demolition. We have 5 syllables in Selfsufficientish, and that is just too many to try and say out loud, specially when your busy or excited, or pissed in true Saturday night sisher style.
So, simple demolition begins by grabbing the first letter or syllable and tagging it to the end of the word... Gives you sish. Or sishers - because obviously self-ish simply doesn't work.... and its a waste of a good f, which could very likely come in useful later.
Adding the second s, is just for the benefit of learners.
Now, the other option is to trade your syllable sounds to scoop up the general gist or message, and that gets a lot trickier...
but you end up with the likes of...
The make a wish mob
Wash yer own damn dish
2 brothers and their Sis
Shelve the extra bits
Got the hang of it?
...Just been trying to imagine the Queen saying those , and its just not working for me... so in that case, you might want to just go with the minimalist approach and stick with Ish...

I don't think it is much harder to say "selfsufficient-ish" than "ssish" - if I do use the shortened form, it is as an abbreviation that is meant to be sounded out loud (eg. does anyone say "bee bee kew" rather than "bar bee kew" when they see "BBQ" written down?).
I really don't think it's worth worrying about though.
