Pumpkins in Panty-hose

Post: # 55423Post Seagull »

I want to grow pumpkins on my balcony (already bought a HUGE container for them and a small variety), and would like to try the trellis method. I've read all over that you can use panty-hose to hold the pumpkins up, but I'm still not quite sure how this is supposed to work.

Do you put the pumpkin inside the panty-hose down in the toe area? At what size do you need to put the pumpkins into the stockings? Does the stocking restict growth?

This is going to look really silly!

I havent tried that, I just usually tie the stalk off to the trellis, but i expect -

- It will not restrict growth,
- you would put it in as soon as it got big enough to weight the vine down,
- depending on the size of punkin you would make up a sling attached to the trellis out of the pantyhose.

Hope this helps

I'm planning to use old bras - my sister's outgrown her D-cups, so they've been donated to the 'Save fee's Squash' fund!

I meant to put my trellis pumpkins into nets/pantyhose this year, but forgot, and guess what - they supported themselves fine anyway. The largest pumpkin I took off was 15 kilos (about 33 pounds) and it had a stalk on it the thickness of my arm (no mean feat). the vine was strong enough to stay put. So maybe as long as your trellis/supports are strong enough they won't need supporting?

Or you could have one in the pantyhose and two in the D-cup bra just above.

Sorry Ina, was the thought of that too much to contemplate.

Last year we used up all of those silly net bags that come around fruit and veg at the supermarket to support our squashes/pumpkins as they grew. They also worked well draped over the soft fruit to keep the birds off.

Keep your hose/tights though for your harvested pumpkins. Use them to hang pumpkins and squashes in to be stored. We hung all of ours this way and they kept very well until early spring. Worked particularly well for those ones that hadn't ripened all the way as we hung them in the window. Just make sure you have a very sturdy support to hang them from.
