what makes you feel contented?

Post: # 72537Post fenwoman »

It struck me this evening. I'd just come indoors after shutting the chickens away. The standard lamp in the living room made it all look nice with it's subdued and relaxing light, the big old wall clock's brass pendulum was swinging slowly back and forth behind the glass and it was tick tocking away, all the dogs were fed and laying down, while the new kittens scampered among them like fairies among sleeping giants. The scullery was warm as the oven was on and the place was filled with the smell of hot apple pie as I'd got one out of the freezer while getting the dog's rabbits out. I sat down with a cup of coffee and thought about things. Sure the days are shorter and the weather is very cold and very wet. All the mopping in the world doesn't keep my floors clean in wet weather, and I am broke. Very broke, more broker than usual thanks to a minor disaster with my son which I had to throw money at to solve but heck, I have a cosy old cottage, a big old clock which lulls me with its mesmeric 'tick tock' I have lots of books to read, some unread, some old favourites. I have 2 freezers full of nice things to eat and shelves stacked high with jams and marmalades. All the money in the world could not buy what I was feeling as I sat there with my steaming aromatic coffee, eyes closed listening to the clock and the dogs snuffling and snoring and the occasional squeak from the pups in the other room. Then the clock gave me a timely reminder with a gentle 'bing bong', that it was time for 'Emmerdale'. Money? Who needs money? Pah!! I am rich in contentment and that's worth a king's ransom.

I have to admit.. a freezer full of our own veg - and more jam chutney and pickles than we can hope to get through in a year does make me feel contented.

also the biscuits we made...... they helped too...

Gidday

Good onya mate. Contentment is far more valuable than any bank balance.

If I didn't feel the same way down here, even when things turn to crap around me, I would be tempted to be envious. But I am not because I too have learnt to be content with what I have.

A very Biblical state of mind to be in Eh!

I always moan when colder weather is approaching but I do love snuggling up on the sofa with hubby & son under blankets watching a movie - bellies full of some heart-warming casserole we had for dinner.

cold weather: lying on my sofa, my head on hubby's knee, reading, smelling dinner in the oven, good music on and hw sounds of my daughter playing and giggling to herself.
warm weather: lying on grass with head on hubby's knee, reading or watching sophie play and smelling freshly cut grass.

I love a good ham sarnie especially with boiled ham I do at xmas. thickly cut, home made chutney on some of my mum's home made bread (my bread is always atrocious).

sitting on tea's back step in the sunshine, drinking a cuppa, reading her last week's magazines and chatting about life and whatnot. I always feel really welcome there so it reminds me I've got a dead fabby mate.
oh how I love my tea, tea in the afternoon. I can't do without it, and I think I'll have another cup very

Right now, i can hear my cockatiel singing his little heart out, the fish are swimming and the dog is snoring next to me. All my animals are happy.

I'm happy.
