Selling out!

Post: # 72859Post Andy Hamilton »

Ok so we have a book deal with this site, that is myself and Dave. We have even sold bags and T-shirts all be it in a non profit, really bad at getting good merchandise or making a profit kind of way.

So at what point would any of you think we are selling out? ~I ask as I would hate it to happen and perhaps the point we signed a contract for our book deal we already had sold out?

As Martin would say - discuss.

Mate!

It depends how you define the term "sold out".

I can't for the life of me regard anyone who is making their living from an ehtical enterprise (such as a book about self sufficientish things - because it is about getting the message out there) being a sell out.

To me, if you sold the site to Google and then started writing for a motoring magazine or about fashion, that might be considered a sell out - again depending on the text of said articles.

Ya gotta eat (if don't eat you don't poo, and if you don't poo, you die!) so I don't see any issues with making money from the fruits of your labours when you are labouring ethically.

JMHO!

I agree with Wombat, you're not selling out till you abandon the ideals that inspired you in the first place. We all need to earn a living (or go totally off-grid, I suppose) and making money from something you love doing isn't selling out at all - in fact, it's admirable, and something a lot more people should be doing!

I have so far not spotted you flogging chocolate teapots, but think you're getting dangerously close to the edge with Googleads.......

You are selling out at the point where you hire a private jet to fly to the States for the book launch...

Selling out is when you won't mix with the likes of us any more - the scruffy dirty fingernailed people who toil in the dirt having to grow our own veg cos we're so poor whilst you'll be buying your own ready washed and chopped onions from Marks and Spencer...... though you'll probably have a cook to make your meals anyway, and probably a butler too.

You are selling out when you start to promote something that you would of, or do find goes against what you oragianally started out to do.
If the book spreads the word you started out trying to promote then you are not selling out

I agree with everyone above. Selling out is when you start going against your principles or those of the site.

I can't wait for the book and am very much looking forward to the TV series, the film and the musical!

I think Martin has come up with an excellent new Ssish product. Can we persuade Green and Black to make chocolate teapots with the ssish logo on the side? I'd buy one.

you are selling out if you adopt opinions that are not your own for the sake of making money.

making a living is fine.

Aw, cheers folks. I have noticed a trend in some areas of the green movement against anyone making moves towards making money. I guess that is why I asked.

I have said on a number of occasions let us know who these companies are and we will take them off.

Shush, they are matching helicopters anyway.
