No Waste Like Home - BBC2, Thursday 18th August, 8.30pm

Post: # 5710Post Tracey Smith »

Hi all,

Just a shortie to tell you to mark a day in your diary next week.

A great friend of mine and an amazing lady, Penney Poyzer will be kicking the bottom of the nation with a groundbreaking new series, "No Waste Like Home".

She is driven with a passion for greener living like you would not believe and I think this series is going to be talked about at great length.

She is certainly not a 'fluff and air' presenter - this gal knows her organic onions! :flower:

So book yourself a seat on the couch for next Thursday, for a refreshing green dip!

No tv so will have to find someone to video itfor me. People think I'm nuts when I start on my favourite theme of waste reduction (I could do with waist reduction). But the world is heading for a big crash with the amount of rubbish it produces. Hope this is just the prog to get people thinking!

Hi all,

I have been lucky enough to preview 3 episodes of the programme and I give it the

Penney uses clever visuals to make strong statements and I think lots of people will be in for a pleasant surprise.....

She's in the Sunday Times and Sunday Mirror tomorrow, the Express on Monday and on the couch with Dermot (BBC breakie) on Thursday....the list goes on and on....

Let me know what you think of the programme!

Penney was on 'You and Yours' on Radio 4 the other day.

Take a look at this page and listen to the interview.

Is anyone watching this? I am and I think it's very good. OK it is the 'same old, same old' format as a lot of other TV shows, but it does spread the word - well I hope so.

I just loved what Penny said to the boys last night about flushing the loo -

"If it's yellow, let it mellow,
If it's brown, flush it down" !!!

Must say we have been doing this recently too to save on water, every time I don't flush that's another watering can I can use on my garden.

Hi MMM,

Thanks for your posting and I think the bigger picture is that the green and energy conscious message IS finally getting out there.

Penney is an amazing lady and she has so much knowledge to pass on about how we can make a difference - ultimately, it's down to the vehicles (programmes), editors and directors as to how it comes across!

Long may the Green Queen kick butt

I missed most of the series as we have just moved to Aberdeenshire and didn't have a telly! In fact we didn't have most of our belongings until the delivery lorries arrived on Wednesday last week - 4 weeks after I moved in with the two boys. Amazingly, in that four weeks I coped just fine with the few belongings we had with us, and much of the stuff that has been delivered will probably stay in boxes until I get round to ebaying/carbooting it! We gather so much stuff that we really don't need.

I watched the episode with the students last Thursday and found it to be a superb programme - it could run and run, and I hope it does. Penney is obviously very good at what she does and she passed her enthusiasm on to even the most reluctant of the students, who then went on to pass it on to someone else.

Great programme - 10/10 to Penney from me :D

Not that I'm being nosy - but what students? Your profile says you are a housewife - just checked whether you might be a lecturer or something... Or is that another life that you've not mentioned yet?

Anyway, I know exactly what you mean about all those things we don't really need. Only 3 years ago I was still a (very mature) student and lived in a single room and managed perfectly ok. And now I live in a three bedroom house (came with the job), all the rooms are full, the shed, too, and I can't even get my car into the garage! I often think about getting rid of it all, but then - there's a lot of stuff now that I took along from home when my father died last year, some furniture, loads of books, I really couldn't let that go... Sentimentality mostly, I know. :?

She means she watched the episode about the students, who were wasting electricity, water etc etc!

I do wonder a bit sometimes, reaching often for my calculator, as Penney talks about the average family and the amount of water/electricity used and amount they spend in the supermarket. We have cut down on everything to the bare minimum and we seem to still be on a par with the average family in the UK for some things, and we are only 2.

Certainly supermarket bills seem to be cheaper in the UK, if you go by what Penney quotes. Or is it just that you can eat more cheaply on junk food than fresh produce?

lol thanks mmm, I did indeed mean the episode with the students. I'm not a teacher, but I am studying at home - I'm doing a Web Entrepreneur course online, and WAS going to be starting my Open University degree course in Environmental Science... everything was set to go and I should have been starting my course this week but because I had moved from England to Scotland the rules are different and I now don't qualify for funding. Very sad - can't afford to go out and work because of childcare costs, and can't afford to do a degree course that might just help me to get a job that pays more.

Grrrr - sorry - OFF soapbox now.

I think it IS cheaper to live on junk food - depending of course, on what junk food you buy. Let's face it, most of the buy one one free offers tend to be the junk food types of food. I thought food was quite cheap in France MMM? Do you have farmer's markets close by?
