Fabulous Décor

Post: # 77836Post mrsflibble »

i thought most of my house deserved a post just to show you the wonderously bad décor and state of repair.

this is the scariest picture, we had had no heating for 3 days, no idea that we had a back boiler, no way to know how to light it and i discovere how to light the fire.... I didn't buy CO detector cards until the next morning. about 14 hours after taking this picture we had to switch the fire off because the tester card had gone black. Sophie's favorite place to that point had been right where she is in this picture. it makes my chest go tight when i think about it.

Image

this is soph's room, unarguably the best kept room in the house. no mould, wallpaper's not too bad... ceiling fan is a bit scarey though.
Image

the livingroom: this picture does not do justice to how badly the room has been painted, the carpet fitted and the lack of locks on the patio doors... on the whole, it's not too bad.

Image

view from the front, out of my bedroom window
Image

view from the back out of Soph's. my hubby is there trying to get the broken whirlygig washing line down
Image

hallway
when we viewed the place most rooms had polystyrene tiles on the ceilings. I informed the tenants that those are illegal and to tell their letting agent... most of the new artex in the house now looks like somebody got a trained monkey to do it.
Image

bathroom... more on that in a second
Image

this is just for those who have not seen my kitchen... 15x15ft ish of pure decorative horror
Image

finally... and don't eat while looking at these; the quality isn't good on the pics but you get the idea.

Oh my goodness - you've got a lot of work to do there. Thank goodness you found out about the fire!!!!!!!

Are you renting or have you bought?

mmmmmmm lovely! What on earth is on your living room ceiling? If that's artex, they've done some lovely roses in it!

On the bright side, knowing it is rented you don't have to do anything about it, so don't have to spend time redecorating, and you don't need to apologise for your awful taste  (just make sure everyone knows you are renting!!!).

Enjoy!

Hey, we used to have that hall carpet!!

It is a bit of a museum piece, isn't it? Even if you are renting, if it is long term, a coat of paint will cheer the place up a bit. Get the landlord to pay for any materials, though.

They should have checked the fire though - that is pretty basic stuff.

the landlord wont give us permission to fix the bedroom yet so I'll be off to the tenant's advice burea next week armed with photos to see if theres any legal way we can fix stuff behind their backs.
the last year's gas certificate passed the fire and boiler stating that they only needed servicing... but the plumbers I've had in this week to fit the new one said that it was either done by a twerp with no eyes or someone at the agent's is giving out backhanders if ya catch my drift.
we only got a new boiler fitted by having to shout and quote the landlord and tenant's act. they kept claiming that nobody had told them it was dangerous, despite having recieved a copy of the new gas certificate AND having a different plumber phone them and inform them WHILE IN OUR PRESENCE that the panelling behind the fire is/was dangerous.

we now have a gaping hole in our livingroom but I'm happy 'cos we're safe. and our gas bills should be a hell of a lot lighter now too; the old boiler was running at about 42% efficiency. our new one is 92.something% effecvtive.

we've had to start fixing the bathroom without permission because it smelled horrible. we removed that peach cladding from around the top of the bath and the old caulking underneath was BLACK. We've since re-done all the sealant round the bath and are starting on the wood cladding around the pipes. that's being replaces but fitted properly. Also, sophie had constant oral and vaginal thrush for the first fortnight we were here. I just couldn't get her to shake it off no matter what I used (daktarin oral and canesten for the other end)... i don't know if it's connected but housemould is fungal and she has a bath every night... :?

anyway... we are kinda worried our tenancy wont be renewed after this first term is up :pale: but hey, cross that bridge when we come to it.

Mrsflibble. The kitchen looks the best of the house. Dated is one thing, unsafe applicanes and shocking mould as in the bathroom is another. I hope your landlord becomes more amenable.

We were in a cottage an abruptly realised our lease was not going to be renewed at the end ofthe 6 months (about half way in) but spent the next 3 months looking again which found us the beautiful spot we're in. So whilst moving again is not a preferred option, especially with a little one, don't get too down hearted it might be a silver lining if you have to move again.
Good luck.

quakerbear: i thoroughly recommend polyfilla mould killer. I know it's not eco friendly but it's the only thing that's killed the mould here.

as for my landlord, well it would be nice to actually speak to the landlord himself as I'd like to know what he's paying his "management" company for! he's in canada....

hey, if we keep a lot of our stuff in boxes it's not too much of a hassle to move again. just expensive.

It was probably all done by cowboys who are 'friends' of the landlord. My friends' house is much the same.

Theirs is not insulated at all, so its bloody cold....all the time...even with the heating on full blast. Their bedroom is so damp that her leather jacket went mouldy in the wardrobe, and there's water running down the wall - they got the landlord to get someone to fix it, and his mate turned up, stuck a couple of tiles on the roof and said it was done.

Its shocking what landlords can get away with!!

Well our management company used to have offices in a really swanky fairly new industrial development 2 years ago. easdy to find and were well advertised.

now they're in an office 2 floors above a shop in a really crappy part of basidon. how did they fall from grace? that's what I'd like to know.
