Advert here

Post: # 84206Post QuakerBear »

Why is there an advert for a dating agency for 'naughty people' at the top of this forum?

Sorry to grump, but it surprised me a little.

Are you talking about the Google ads? I've no idea but there are 4 ads for them now!

Will let Andy know about it - they are supposed to be vaguely SSish-ish!

don't feel guilty! Gives me an ideal chance to have another tilt at the damned things...........
I have said it until I'm blue in the face ( ) - they "cheapen" any site festooned with them, slow up page loading considerably (as does the useless "statcounter" ), and despite several inbuilt filters designed to only dish up "suitable" ads still manage to advertise some of the dodgiest companies in the renewable energy business (you know the ones! - as seen on TV - "Rogue Traders"), and now it appears, utter sleazoid tat! :geek:
I've got no problem with site owners wanting to bring in a bob or two to help with the hosting fees - it is NOT rocket science to sell your own advertising space, and running a simple "banner rotation", then you have complete say over what appears on your site - you have none with Googleads..........

Feel better now, Martin?

I don't even normally notice the things at all but now that I'm looking at them they keep changing to dodgy ads!

I only noticed this one because it had pictures and looked like the ladies were about to burst out of the banner. Normally I don't read them, but now that I've started there are adverts for chat rooms that sound abit dodgy. Hhhmm.

I use firefox too, and have adblock plus installed. It makes browsing much more pleasurable, not being bothered by ads. I remember back before I installed it: ads on the side of the screen flashing at me in bright colors, distracting from what I was trying to read.

Ok after what seems like a bit of time in exile, but got connected to the internet yesterday.... returning to the forum and the issue of google ads. Been talking to Dave about this and we plan to make quite a bold step of perhaps getting rid of the google ads altogether. (Do I hear Martin falling off his chair?)

This site is funded by those ads as in more ways than just web hosting, what I mean is train fares to (and from) Daves, phone calls ect... In fact totting up the first ever tax return for ish... I discovered that we will be running at a loss and have done for some years.

Ish has never been a money making scheme/site but it is good to not have to pay out of our own pockets to keep it running. This is why we have the google ads. So the future plans are to directly contact ethical companies and try and sell them the space... So watch this space.
