Would you plant out seedlings now?

Post: # 94561Post Andy Hamilton »

My seedlings are all starting to look rather big, as ever got all excited and planted them really early. Has anyone in the UK planted out theirs yet? It looks like there could still be some hard frosts on the way.

Still waiting for consistently milder weather here (I would not dream of using the word 'warm'). The winds are still too cold and frosts are definately still a threat.

As my greenhouse is bursting though I am going to have to risk planting out under cloches to make room for the next batch of sowing.

Well, might as well continue the southward progression until we get to Andy. All of my gardening memories are north Derbyshire-based, but I'm not too far away now, and I'm beginning to get stuff out under glass now(who am I kidding? - under plastic).

Only under cover - I sowed leeks in a big pot a couple of weeks ago and just left it in the cold frame, the seedlings are all coming up now but it'll be a while before they go out. I sowed some optimistic salad leaves in a pot and wrapped in a plastic bag, that's also in the coldframe. Broad beans are up and doing fine. I won't do any direct sowing until June up here.

Yep, mine are going out this week under clear plastic bottle cloches. However I do hedge my bets and keep some back in the greenhouse just in case. w.

I planted out cabbages, leaf beet, spinach mangetout, and swedes before all this cold stuff was forcast so I've swathed them in fleece and am hoping for the best!

I think I will have to plant at least the runner beans out as they have out grown their toilet rolls. GOing to get loads of hay and cover them up though. Might be risking it, well I know I am risking it but will run up and pour cold water on them at the next frost.

I've started hardening off my tomatoes but most other things either still haven't gone in (going to plant them direct) or a still a bit small and are only just being potted on. Still, the rhubarb's looking fantastic!

I've got a row of peas in just this everning, all covered with plastic bottle cloches.
I'm hoping the bottles protect them, but if not, I've got another tray of replacement seedlings in the cold frame.

I also have runner beans ready - planted them a lot earlier than I should have done, so I may as well put them out too since they're also getting too big for the pots.

I haven't even pricked any of those plants out that you are mentioning up there... Instead, I think I'll be getting wellies for the finches that are trying to swim across my back "garden" to find some bird feed!

I planted out my broad beans from pots last weekend and I know they are quite hardy anyway but they are OK. The parsnips sewn in Feb are coming up fine. Planning to harden off the brassica plants this week as the forecast for frost seems to be off the cards fingers crossed.

Everything in pots are looking leggy and desperate so I'll ahve to hedge some bets somewhere :?
