Planting
Planting
Well I'm sure I've done everything wrong but hoping for the best. OH and I planted out a test potato (to see if we could grow our own from the shop type bags), some coriander, basil, rocket, found a few wiggling worms in the dirt (so hopeful for a good sign). We're on limited space so we've adapted a small patch that used to have weeds int it to a tiny garden and I mean tiny 1' wide and 5' long. Plus using some donated tyres we're going to try carrots. Once sprouted we'll likely relocate.
Windowsill has a collection of seeds in dirt awaiting rebirth. Watercress, tomatos, cukes.
I've never gardened before in my life and my OH only has childhood memories of tagging along behind his grandfather outside in the veg patch.
Still it is a lovely feeling "trying" to grow and reading everything now we can. Probably should have done that to start with but the fever grows daily to learn more.

I am sure that your potato will grow, only trouble is that by the time you notice that it is growing you will be a bit late to plant any more... stick a few more in just now too, they grow really well in tires... I think 4 to stack is regarded as a good planting rationing - use 2 or three tires to start with, then as your potatoes grow add another tire and dirt, then another until the foliage starts to die off (in the Autumn)
Carrots don't like getting moved best to leave them in the tires.
Just wait till all your seeds germinate and you have hundreds of little shoots everywhere... it is so exciting
good luck

As Annpan says, the tattie will grow. Get some more in too otherwise they won't get much of a chance to produce decent crop. Order some veg catalogues so you can buy some certified seed for next year - there is much less chance of the tatties getting any disease that way and the list of varieties is endless!
I would agree to leave your carrots in the tyres - most depp root crops don't like being moved.
If you can get hold of Kitchen Garden Magazine have a wee read - I love when my copy comes in the post!

Hi again,
Thank you for the replies. Your logic was indeed spot on. I suppose if I plant 4 potatos and none grow, its no loss more than 1 vs planting 1 and having it grow when I could have tried 4. If that makes any sense :)
I definitely would like to order some veg mags/cats, etc. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm so green right now I can only hope like the seeds we stumble along growing as we go :)
Take care.

excellent - you will soon be addicted!
dont be disheartened if not everything works... that always happens.. just do a few different things and you will learn your preferred things to grow and your way of doing things.
