Backyard Self-sufficiency - Jackie French

I was intriged however, she suggests completely different methods than any other books Ive read, such as scrapping the seperate beds and crop rotation, and growing vegetables, and flowers mixed up as it creates for a more healthy gard...

Haha, this is exciting, a strange bird in your garden. I look forward to you finding out. Shame it wasn't a pelican.
My only guess is a white guinea fowl?

Rabbits and their Waste

My boyfriend has 6 rabbits, (plus another 5 babies) which he cleans out every few days or sometimes even as often as every day. He scrapes out all their sawdust and poop from 4 hutches into a bin bag and fills it up and then ends up with a backlog of bags each week 'cause the binmen will only take s...

Re: To plant now ?

Does anybody know about sowing leeks in pots indoors this time of year? I can't seem to find much information about it but I really do like leeks.

Re: Need your ideas please!

I think you're doing very good by fighting to reduce this waste produced by freebies. What everyone needs and finds most useful are pens or pencils if you can find a sustainable source or make sure they're able to be recycled or are made form recycled sources. Other useful things are bags, people wi...

Re: Apple Tree Variety & Positioning?

Thank you fro all your help. In the end we got a dwarf rootstock Scrumptious tree, and it is planted half way between the pear and the cherry tree along a south east facing hedge. There's a variety of tree on Ken Muir's site called a minerette, they look really nice as potted plants, I could imagine...

Re: Apple Tree Variety & Positioning?

Oh wow, okay that is interesting. Two more questions then, how do I know if the pear tree is dwarf rootstock, I'm not familiar with this term, so I'm just assuming it means it has shorter roots or not? &I'd like to trust the bees, except with their population in decline, and this garden not bein...

Apple Tree Variety & Positioning?

I am new to this self sufficient-ish lifestyle and want to get an apple tree this weekend. I'll try to provide as much info as I can so you can help me. Our garden is in Bournemouth 1.5km from the coast I'm looking to plant an apple tree in the same corner of the garden where there is already an est...

Yet Another New One

Hello, my name is Sam. I'm 18 and in my final year of college at the moment. I study Animal Management, and this is where my fascination with self-sufficiency began. I love working with the animals at college, the livestock that is as we have exotic animals and small mammals which I don't much see t...
