has anyone got/tried the attatchment you can get for a pasta machine to make pasta shapes.. macaroni etc? I quite fancy one but they are not cheap...

making ou own pasta would be great.. there is a limit to how much lasagne and tagliateli we eat though... have more use for pasta shapes

I make macaroni by hand using a thin piece of squared metal. First make egg-free pasta dough (I think I put a recipe up a while back) then roll it into thin (slightly less than a 1cm) sausages. Then cut them into 2cm lengths.

Then take two at a time, place them a few cms apart and roll your metal rod back and forth over them quickly and you've got macaroni. I usually make orecchiette (little ears) pasta at the same time.

having seen a similar type of pasta made, I think she means that as you roll, the pasta will eventually come up and meet itself, thus creating the tube life affair...

Yep, that's it. Take two of your cut bits of pasta at a time and put the metal rod on top of them and quickly roll it (the rod - put your hands at either end) back and forth. As if by magic, the pasta rolls around the rod, creating a tube. It takes a wee bit of practice but, is quite simple and if you have a few that don't quite become tube-like, they'll just add to the rustic charm.

Would you post the recipe again please?

I'm not quite following the metal rod thing either ... any photos of the method?

The egg-free pasta recipe can be found here http://www.selfsufficientish.com/forum/ ... free+pasta

I'll post pictures the next time I make some (in the next couple of days).
