I usually go into "emergency management" mode, i.e.: check if everyone's safe for now, make the necessary phone calls, put pressure on the wound (depending on what's needed).
Then, at some point, there will be something I need to say and my throat will close off and my emotional breakdown starts.
how do you cope with bad news?

tend not to cry execpt when had to put my dog down, all matter of fact its the kindest etc then held her and blubbed like a baby for ages (didn't cry when grand perants died could rationalise that)
usually think it could be worse and being a fireman have seen lots of worse .
so in general just get on with life and help them around you do the same.
drives wifey insane cause she don't understand but then neither do i?
