help with a project :)

Post: # 104850Post Organic_Linker »

Hi all, wondered if i could pick the "collective brain" please.

I need some short and quirky facts or trivia about some fruits and veg, but they need to be fairly generic and common place - ie where i dont neccessarily have to quote a source (space issue)... they need to be fairly short - ie 1 paragraph.

Sorry if this is seen as cheeky or anything - just thought 2120 heads were better than 1!

These are the items....

Apple
Banana
Cherry
Date
Fig
Grapefruit
Kiwi
Lime
Orange
Pear
Strawberry
Tomato
Broccoli
Carrot
Pettit Pois
Leek
Onion
Avocado
Spinach
Cucumber

Any comments are welcomed and highly appreciated :cooldude:

Bananas and horses are the only two things measured in hands.

The maggots went into the Ark in pears. No? oh, OK.

Tomatoes were once thought to be aphrodisiacs - hence the term Love Apple.

tomatoes are actually a fruit.. and strawberries are not actually a berry - the real berry part of the strawberry is the seed bit on the outside..

All Hass avocados (the most common variety) can be traced back to a single mother tree that died.... not very long ago.
They're not weeds - that's a habitat for wildlife, don't you know?

Sailors were called "limeys" because they ate dried limes to stave off scurvy.

The flower on a fig is actually inside of the fruit.

Carrots once were available in many different colors, all except the orange ones were allowed to die out, because of a fad. (Multicolored carrots are now being reintroduced)

A kiwi vine may have over 10,000 blossoms at one time, and can produce over 100 pounds of fruit per year!

The juice from raw leeks is very beneficial for Shingles as a topical application....

bramley apple trees are all cuttings from the original bramley tree which still lives! it was planted as a pip in the 1800s and is still giving fruit today.

100g of broccolli contains more vitamin c than 204 apples. 1 large adult handful, steamed, contains as much calcium as a glass of milk. excessive quantities of broccolli should be avoided by pregnant women due to its high concentration of vitamin A.
