Repairing chipped plates

Post: # 112323Post gigglybug »

I have just chipped a serving plate that I love (a gift) :( , I was wondering if anyone knows if you can buy enamel paint to repair it? I imagine that the enamel paint you get in wilko etc isn't suitable for food?

Thanks
Amanda

Enamel paint is not the same as enamelling - NO enamel paint is suitable for food use.

Don't chuck it out, though - my sister is a potter and I'm seeing her tomorrow (Sunday). I'll ask the expert.

Hi
Craft shops sell paint specifically for use on crockery. I think you have to avoid putting it in the dishwasher though.

Great. Thank you. I will have to convince OH to take me, he tries to keep me away from craft shops, I spend ages browsing, just too much great stuff

Well, I asked the potter. She says, basically, that if it's a large chip/crack then forget food use altogether. On the other hand, if it's a small chip on the rim, then you can use epoxy or air-drying plasticine or papier mache - anything you like really - to fix it and then paint it with enamel paint or the purpose-made crockery paint Thomzo mentions. BUT ONLY so long as you can be sure that food won't come into contact with the repair. And afterwards it's hand-washing only.
