Would think so. I've got a wind turbine my mate made with a motor from an large office laser copier. Puts out 1.5 amps on a good blowy day so, I'd imagine a washing machine motor would be even more powerful!

any ideas how I'd go about it? I'm totally clueless on alternative energy sources.

I think it needs to be a permanent magnet DC motor.

If it is an AC motor you will need to run it through a half wave rectifier to get DC out of it, hopefully at a voltage you can store in a battery

How do you know if a motor is AC or DC - can you point me to any information sources for complete novices in this kind of thing?

I so envy those guys on scrapheap challenge - I'd love to have the knowledge to turn stuff into working...well...other stuff. :?
