What to plant

Post: # 117077Post Cpt Drinkloads (Rtd) »

I need help, this is going to tax the brain a little, so here goes:-

First problem is I live on a narrowboat on the canal, I have no soil at all, everything will have to be grown in containers.

Second problem is they have to sit on the roof of my boat, the plant and the container can be no more than 45cm tall as I have to get under low bridges and would hate to see my hard work fall into the cut.

Thirdly I have no idea at all what to grow, at the moment I buy food as I need it, I am in the process of building a coolbox that woks by osmosis, so I will be able to store things for a couple of days.

Fourthly, I am not short of water, I can use the water from the canal.

Please point me in the right direction so I can at least get something planted soon.

Thanks

Dave

One thing I've had great success in shallow containers is round carrots.
The variety name is 'Parmex' and it makes small globe shaped carrots about an inch in diameter and they taste great too. Also you can grow them close spaced as they don't twine together like normal carrots
If we have a warm autumn there should be time to get a crop before winter.

Lettuce, spinach, herbs, strawberries.

Stuff that you use often, tastes better fresh and is over priced in shops.

Have you seen the pot-in-pot cooler, I just wonder if it would be a good small scale storage solution for you?

Hom much width ways do you have- I'm wondering about sprawling courgettes- they aren't tall but they do spread out a fair bit if you let them.... but my inital thoughts were indeed watercress!

I have grown courgettes in growbags which are low, but it's too late this year. I bet some of the dwarf pea varieties would fair OK, I've grown Kelvedon Wondor (you can still plant them now if you are quick), they are not very tall.

What, in a floating bed that can be pulled behind the boat?
