garlic sprouting

Post: # 125984Post mumzy »

:flower:
Hi everyone.
I live in Brisbane Australia and I just wondered if you could help with a garlic question.
I have some garlic in my fridge which is sprouting. Can I plant it?
Love this site.
It makes me homesick though. I originally come from Bunbury in Cheshire.
Climate is a bit warmer here though.
Thanks

Hi! I'm in NZ and planted some of mine - and it seems to be growing beautifully! Just pull the cloves apart & plant them individually :flower:

Yes. Just to expand on that, plant each bulb about a fist's width apart, and mulch heavily between the sprouts. Water occasionally if you don't get any rain, and keep topping up the mulch.

I've also grown garlic from shop bought bulbs, and it's turned out fine. We did have one sprouting recently but the cats kept playing with it so my hubby put it out of sight... and mind... it shrivelled up!

I use shop bought garlic. I normally start it off in a bowl of water till the first shoots/roots show and then bung it in, I had a spare window box and grew five in there

Hi Mumzy, go for it. We've planted shop bought, for the last 3 years. Didn't wait for 'em to shoot, just split 'em,& chucked 'em in the soil about 1" below the surface. 6 months (or so) later, after the foliage turns brown, pull 'em,dry 'em & store in a cool ,dry place,(if you can find one!!...i'm sure your summer will be much better than our poor excuse). P.S. give my regards to Noosa.
it's either one or the other, or neither of the two.
