Howdy from the Ozarks

Post: # 126945Post =Hunter= »

Hi folks,
Love the site. A lot of helpful information here. I bought 25 acres in the heart of the Ozarks in November 2007. I have been taking a lot of pictures, doing a lot of planning and research this past year. I hope to eventually live off the grid, raising my own fruits/veggies and livestock. I look forward to meeting you people and hearing about your places and learning from your experience. My city friends are about bored with hearing about my place so I am looking for more victims.

Hi
Sorry, this is completely off subject, but you've just given me a lovely blast from the past. Since I saw your thread I've been humming Jimmy Blue by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.
So thankyou and welcome!

Hiya Hunter, welcome! We aren't easily bored...

When I first read your subject line, I thought that Ozarks was something from Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy or suchlike... I learn something new every day!

Now that I have a few minutes let me tell you a little about the place. I looked for over a year, searching for some land that had live water, a good southern exposure, decent soil, in the Ozarks and not too far from where I currently live. I found this place about 3 hours from Memphis (where i live and work), it has a spring that flows into a year round creek that runs 850' along my west property line. Also have a stream with a waterfall that runs east to west and flows to the creek. The soil is decent, sandy and lots of southern slopes with great exposure. There are lots of Walnut, Oak, Pine and Cedar trees there now. I am still taking inventory of what is there and hope to find some sugar maple trees too. I planted about 100 trees i got from the Missouri Dept of Conservation earlier this Spring. I started apple trees from seed in Feburary and have them in containers on my patio now. They are already over 2' tall! Also got grapes going in containers which I hope to take cuttings from and start more. There was already a cross-fencing and a few pens along with a chicken coop and an outhouse on the property. Looks like an old house was there at one time, too. That looks wonderful. I wish I had water like that.

Are you aware that apple seeds don't come true? (i.e., the seeds in an apple often produce a different kind of apple)? It'll be interesting to see what kind of apples you get. It looks like you've got plenty of room to experiment.
