can I send seeds from Australia?

Post: # 236Post gill didsbury »

Hi All,

I just wondered if I can send seeds to the UK? any restictions?
Seeds can be sent to Australia as long as they have the botanical name on the package.

Happy Gardening :P

G'DAy Gill,

Sorry but I don't think that is 100% correct, about seeds to Australia. My son in law is Belgian, and his mother sent us some seeds, some got through and some were confiscated. She also got an abusive letter threatening fines in the future  .

Hi Andy,
I checked this out with customs here, and thats what they said they needed, botanical and common name on outside of package. I have had seeds sent like this from UK and have had no problems

International seed Swap

Post: # 247Post Andy Hamilton »

Looks like we could have an international seed swap on our hands then. Excellent.

I know that Australia is pretty hot all year round, does this mean you have an all year round growing season? Otherwise when our winter starts it is your summer and vice versa so it could work out very well, as we go to seed (so to speak) you will start planting.

Seeds

Some parts of Australia do have a year round growing season, from northern NSW up. Where I am in Sydney I can grow for most of the year but we still get frosts so anything frost sensitive is out for 4 months of the year or so

It would be good to swap some seeds, I suppose most of our veggies cam from the UK originally anyway

Australian seeds

Post: # 7347Post Kfish »

Woo hoo - all-year growing season - one of the best things about living in Brisbane! Spring has sprung, the humidity is lethal, the climate has been like living in a greenhouse and the vines are taller every time I look at them ! :blob8:

So are the weeds. :(

A lot of the plants grown around my parts are actually tropical, I guess because of the climate. It would make sense that the further south (in Australia) you went, the more English the plants would be.

I would be all for an international seed swap, Customs permitting. :flower: I can offer bullock's heart tomatoes, jam melon, rocket lettuce, mung beans etc.

If anyone could provide me with elderflower, zucchini / squash, or perennial bean seeds, that would be great! Let's get this swap going! :dave:

Hi Kfish,

I did send some seeds to Gill this year and they got there but you have to send seeds that are in unopened packets with a company name on (like Suttons etc) Gill's envelope of seeds were opened, but not the packets. I think they were just checking. She sent me some in return and no one had even sniffed at them!

You can arrange for your seeds to sealed in a bag and labelled. contact Nicola Lee of Nicky's Seeds at www.nickys-nursery.co.uk for details. I haven't availed of this particular service myself, but I have bought seeds online from here recently and found the the service to first-rate.
