wrappings for sandwiches

Post: # 137211Post hippy chick »

My hubby and I both take sandwiches to work with us each day. Hubby's keen on sandwich bags, which are dastardly for the environment - I'm willing to swap for re-usable tupperware style boxes, which I think is environmentally friendlier (isn't it?) but as he often has to travel to London etc on the train, he doesn't want to be carting boxes around in his already bursting at the seems bag. What other options are there for wrapping the sandwiches in? Is it possible to get biodegradable sandwich bags which I could dispose of in my compost dalek? Please please help! :flower:

If you do your shopping in a supermarket and get plastic carrier bags, why not use them for re-usable sandwich bags ?
If you refuse the bags or if they are banned like us in Ireland, then I'm sure ordinary brown paper bags could be bought, and they would certainly be OK in the compost heap.
Or ... how about the inner bags of empty cereal boxes, no good on a compost heap but better than chucking away without recycling.

I use pasta and bread bags.

I have seen fancy reusable sandwich wraps - basically a piece of fabric (about a foot square)with a plasticy coating on one side and a few poppers to keep it closed - you could make one... could be very fashionable :king:

Ann pan, those sound great!

I don't know if the plastic bags from the store are clean enough to carry food. Also, they might outgas.

Re-using bread bags is all I've heard of so far.

I'm in the tupperware group. I know it's plastic, but I reuse them for decades.

Here's a link to something almost identical to the one I saw

I might have seen them in Lakeland or John Lewis, but it wasn't the same brand as this one I have linked to.

That sounds amazing... I guess I could make some from some of that coated tablecloth type material... I'll just have to see where I can get some. What a fab idea!

I think that is a brilliant idea too. I am not great at making things though but I might give it a try. :flower:

For the school lunch box I use greaseproof paper which I then compost or the very occasional bread bread when I have been too lazy to make my own bread. For my sandwiches I just put them straight in a small plastic box so don't need any wrapping.

You can simply re-use the sandwich bags you already have! They wash well. Last year I had a special "washing line" above the sink for plastic bags... they were just washed as normal when I did the dishes and pegged up there upside down to dry.
