The beans made me think of it

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

I've got a vegan worcester sauce recipe, but haven't tried it yet. Have you tried Hendersons Relish? It tastes exactly like L+P but is vegan.

Hendersons is a luxury my Sheffield born OH has introduced me to! It's very yummy! Better than L&P for me! Until recently we would buy an entire box to bring home when we went to Sheffield. but it seems to have started to appear in local supermarkets - I guess the word is spreading!

Vegemite rules!!! And it should be on my list.

Beauty, RRE, is in the eye of the beholder - or in this case taste buds. I stand by my original statement

I lived in Australia for several years and relied on a steady stream of visitors to keep me in Marmite supplies. Tried Vegemite and Promite - my comments on those are best not repeated.

I used to get strange looks at customs when I arrived back in Australia from a trip to the UK - suitcase full of Marmite ('it's like Vegemite but better'), Atora vegetable suet ('it's dried shredded vegetable fat')and Soreen malt loaf ('it's like a slightly dry sticky fruit cake'). I also used to take Walker's crisps and Cadbury's chocolate back for a friend - you can get Cadbury's chocolate in Australia but the texture is different - something to do with the grass and therefore milk apparently.

On that topic - anyone got a recipe for malt loaf a la Soreen? Would love to be able to make my own.

Crumpets are easy enough to make yourself Shell.
All you need is a heavy based frying pan, a large plain pastry cutter and some yeasted batter mix.

As for Marmite I'm firmly on the side of Julie with this .... Bovril, both beef and the chicken on toast, Marmite sucks ... :pukeright:

Tiger Bread... I have experimented, I have searched the internet and... nothing, I simply cannot replicate the taste. I had it so near at one point but juuuuusssttt not quite right and it seems no one else can do it either!

I even went to the trouble to pretend to have a nut allergy and get a list of ingredients from my local supermarkets but they sent me a list of things that I was already using so I suspect they left vital ingredients off the list to safeguard their recipe.

I can't think of anything else offhand but I'm sure there are a few more :)

Heinz baked beans - gotta be Heinz (although I've never heard of Branston beans)
Heinz tomato soup - for when I'm sick
Japalpeno peppers - don't know how to make the spicy vinegar like that so my home made pickled chillies are nothing like! :(

There are tons of food stuffs that I bring back from England to France, cos I can't get them here, but that's not really what this thread is all about.

I do love Ambrosia creamed rice, but I'm just as happy with home made even though it doesn't taste the same (I'm not trying to recreate the taste).

I've tried replicating Heinz-like baked beans since we've been in France and have got reasonably close but they will never be quite right because the beans aren't quite as firm.

I now buy haricots blancs a la tomate here and "doctor" them with a small squirt each of tomato ketchup and Worcester sauce, plus a miniscule amount of sugar and salt, plus a quick grind of black pepper. They are quite acceptable like this, although never as good as Heinz.

And NOTHING is as good as Marmite, it's the best!
Growing old is much better then the alternative!

I have to say that I agree with the majority. I live on both baked beans, (heinz or branston) whichever is the cheapest when I am shopping, and marmite. I love the stuff!!!!! :flower:
