The leaf has 3 layers, the rind, the mucilage and the gel fillet. The gel is in the inner leaf and is an anti-inflamatory and has antibacterial and andtifungal properties - that's what you use on cuts. Aloe vera latex is found in tubules just below the rind/outerskin of the leaf. It is a bitter, yellow sticky substance - and it makes you poop! Some Jamaican mothers dab it on their breasts to instantly wean their children it tastes that bad!

How do you get babies?!

My Aloe Vera is about 2 years old, and it's about 2ft in total span...no babies yet...

I could do with babies too, Nik wants one.

You mean your mummy didn't tell you about the goosebery patch?

If you are talking about Aloe babies - they just seem to happen. We have one that needs potting up - we could pot it and send it to you for Nik if you'd like.

mine just seem to sprout, whether it's a different type I don't know but they grow like flipping weeds!!!

also, I've found otally by accident that if you dig one up, stick it in a box and forget about it for 3 weeks it'll STILL BE ALIVE when the box is opened.
honestly, I think they're aliens.

I potted up loads of AV babies & gave them away in pretty (& cheap) pots as presents over the last couple of Christmas'.

The remaining potted-up babies aren't looking too good, but the parent plant is still producing like mad. I've left them on the parent plant for the time being & it has curled over in a charmingly wierd way. It really does look like an alien.

Even better is that my original plant came from freecycle too.

I have shed-loads of aloe vera plants...they have babies all the time!! I think that the more you ignore them, the more bables they have...I have run out of people to give them to now, so if anyones in or near the Rhondda, let me know and I will gladly pass some on!!
