Blending potato
ok ... when a soup recipe calls for potato and then says blend my heart sinks... I usually leave it out or will add cooked and mashed at the end ... Because... when I blend it goes like snot yes not a very nice thing to look at in your soup bowl... so why? do you have the same trouble? am I just mad ?

Re: Blending potato
I decided to cut corners once when I was making something that required a mashed potato topping. I put it in the blender. Sheer laziness on my part. Yes, it came out like snot. It was so bad, that I covered it in breadcrumbs to take attention away from it. Yuk!

lol ... I did that with bacon once ... didn't bother with knives... hubby in a temper trying to show there was enough bacon for a sandwich as well as for a meal ... I lost the plot and turned it all into pate

So I take blending spuds is tricksy for others too ... so why do we keep getting told to do it?

Re: Blending potato
I use a hand blender too the bigger one as you say is to much faffing...
Does OH leave them as unblended or does he blend then? I dont mind chunky bits in my soup but I keep seeing pics of vibrant green nettle soup that is smooth? every time I add and blend the spuds it just sets ... good job I eat odd looking things

Re: Blending potato
Strange, I cook my spuds in with everything else so they are falling to pieces by the time I blend them. I don't use waxy spuds though - only the nice fluffy ones you use for mashed potatoes. I don't over blitz and just stop by the time everything has gone all smooth and soup (not snot) like.

Re: Blending potato
Yep, like MMM says, you blend - but lightly!
If you over blend, it just goes snotty - if the potato mix is too stiff & doesn't fold too well, try adding a little milk to make it a touch free-er... is that even a word? haha!

Re: Blending potato
It sounds like you're putting too much potato in - there should only be enough in to thicken the soup slightly not give it the consistency of snot.
Make sure it's cooked really well if you want to blend it, spuds pretty much fall apart on their own and as everything's getting blended it doesn't matter if your other veg are cooked to dropping either.
