Mushrooms

Post: # 153248Post dave45 »

Many years ago I invested a wodge of cash in an "easy mushroom" kit. A poly bag full of ready-to-go mushroom compost... just leave it in a dark damp cellar and hey-presto after a couple of weeks you will be cropping kilos of lovely mushrooms.

Except it produced absolutely nothing at all. Not a one.

I'd really quite like to grow mushrooms - anyone doing it successfully?

I have seen the packs in B+Q and the like and always fancied it. I thought they looked quite easy but I don't currently have a suitable shed or whatever.

And I won't be eating wild mushrooms any time soon.

Hope someone can give some pointers

I did try "shaggy ink caps" once many years ago... they were ace !
easy to identify
pop up overnight
get them when fresh
use in recipes instead of chicken !

but I've moved and no longer have a source... hence the desire to cultivate

Have been eating St George's mushrooms picked from near OH's work for about the last couple of weeks. Truely yummy and absolutely free :thumbright:

I had a mushroom box kit last year from B&Q and it worked fabulously! The mushrooms were lovely.

I've got another box kit this year and its being a bit slow at the moment...the mycenium (is that the word?!) is definitely spreading, but there are no mushrooms as of yet.

I grew some mushrooms from a box kit many years ago and they were very successful, but I don't think there was any saving in money. It was fun to try but don't do it if you have a cat as I discovered the 2nd time I tried. Box of compost = nice indoor cat toilet.

Or dogs that like vegetables....

Finlay nipped a couple of mushrooms last year...and all the green peppers...and a courgette.
