Halogen Oven

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Halogen Oven

Post: # 154805Post Spuddle »

I've just bought a JML halogen oven in an effort to save electricity. So far it looks quite good but it's really difficult to find receipes, even on the internet. The leaflet that came with it is totally useless. Does anyone have any tips on using these ovens? Or, better still, any tried and tested recipes for bread and vegetarian meals?

I'd never heard of a halogen oven before. Although I was sceptic that they would save money it seems they are not too bad at all. Love to hear what you find out. Anyway, this thread on another forum might be an interesting read...

It's a big thread and I've not read it all, but mostly positive comments. It does include info on how to cook different food stuffs. My guess is that it saves a little by being quicker and needing no warm up time. I would fear that bigger meals might cost more energy than a normal oven.

I read the forum on money saving expert before buying. The majority of reviews were positive and the JML seemed to come out as the best buy. (No - I don't have any connection with the company!!)
I still haven't found any recipes but have been experimenting with baking bread and the results are very good. To make 1 loaf (which is all I usually make at a time as I like it fresh) it costs less than either the bread-making machine or the electric oven. I do find that I need to turn the loaf over for the last 10 mins to make sure the bottom is cooked through. That is the only drawback so far.
It is certainly quicker than a normal oven because there is very little pre-heating time.
It is plenty big enough for the two of us but I doubt it would be enough for a family, although the manufacturers do say you can roast a whole chicken and all the veg in it but as I'm vegetarian, I'm not likely to be testing that one!
