Caterpillar identity

Post: # 163020Post Odsox »

Just found this caterpillar on goosegrass that I have never seen before.
It is about 3 inches long and about half an inch thick.
Does anybody have any idea what it is ?

I can't decide if that's cute or downright creepy. Weird.

I was going to say ...

Don't be silly - that's no elephant. And why are you calling Odsox Hawkmoth?

... but then I decided not to.

OMG I thought the first photo was a joke photo of a toy snake!!! Gave me a bit of a fright that did!

He's a scary looking monster isn't he? but if he eats goosegrass with that amazing mouth then I want several of them!

Thanks for the replies, I thought it was an Elephant Hawk moth too but was thrown by the colour.
I thought they were brown but this one is slate grey.
But you're right, it DOES look scary and just like a dumpy snake.
