After the inhabitants of Eigg (Eiggs? :-)) bought their independence, they went on to build their own electricity grid powered by renewables (hydro, sun and wind.) It's pretty impressive stuff, IMHO.

It just shows that if there's a will theres a way doesn't it. Not too bad a price tag either at 1.6m. Yes it's probably a lot per capita but to have a totally indipendent power grid is worth more than just money.

I guess that life on the islands and highlands are tough but I'd love to give it a go someday but I doubt I'll ever get the chance.
