hey there!

i was just googling, making a little chart of how each of my newly acquired herbs likes to be treated and i found this place. it's so cute! :) i'm often intimidated by sites that assume i am living in some commune in the woods, so i love the "ish" approach---very helpful and user-friendly.
i want a selfsufficientish tee-shirt! (yes, i'm american, how did you know?) ;)
anyway, cool site. i'll be back around.

wondering if she could get away with raising chickens on her apartment balcony,
glow

G'DAy Glowlita,

I can understand your point, I do all my stuff in an urban back yard

Nice to see you here, welcome!

Hi glowlita, I'm new here as well. I used to keep chickens in my back yard in town, as long as there was no cockerel I got away with it ! people never complained about trafic noise, but as soon as the cockerel would crow, well !!!

Hi from another newcomer. I have just reclaimed my garden from years of kids play, fine for its time but now the garden is mine again I intend to grow organic veg for the family. I was really pleased to find this site because although I would love to be totally self sufficiant, with a small garden and being in a terrace its just not possible. This site is just what I'm looking for - lots of help and inspiration. Back to the subject - I am hoping to keep a few chickens and wonder how theneighbours will take it! The noise of strimmer man gets quite bad around here so surely a few chickens (no cockerel) wont make too much noise?

G'Day Lyds,

Welcome to the site.

I have kept chooks in my suburban backyard for over 20 years, some of theneighbours like the sounds of the chooks, but by and large they are pretty quiet.

Hi nyds, I think you should be OK, it's really only the cockerel that seems to upset people. have never lived anywhere without chooks, used to keep some on an allotment when I couldn't have them at the house.

Helloooo glowita

Glad you like the ish approach of the site and the site in general. I live in a flat (appartment) myself so I definetly don't asume that people have to live on a commune

You are not the first to mention T-shirts (sunpuppy has also). This is definetly something that we are contemplating. When we get our next google cheque we will have a think on. I think T-shirts will happen but not for a bit.

As for chickens, its there a communal garden for your appartment block? Perhaps you could all get soem between you and share out the eggs?
